Thom Mayne:

“The main staircase at the Cooper Union became the primary public focus of the building. It's completely straightforward: we literally took inspiration from the New York Public Library, the Met, et cetera... The staircase is a social meeting place, it's more like seating, actually. Like most work in architecture, everything functions multivalently; it's part of an environmental approach as well. It's extremely successful, it works just like the Met. It's constantly packed with people and that's the intention. It's the most prevalent image that you see when you walk in the door, the connective tissue.”
