César Pelli:

“To create the Petronas Towers was complex because I needed to express emotions in a way that will be understood by people from a different country than my own.  I had to get into the soul of the Malaysians. I dug deeply into Islamic art and tried to transform it into something contemporary. It took time to convince the Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad — he was very involved and a very bright guy — that what we would do is for Malaysia. It was not an easy building to design, but it was unquestionably very rewarding.”
