David Chipperfield:

“With regards to restoring the Neues Museum, visually, it wasn’t necessarily such a controversial idea but conceptually it definitely was. And we set this problem for ourselves, in a way! Of course we were interested in what the author intended, but there were lots of other stories and lots of other issues that gave certain flexibility. Up until the day of opening, no one knew what the reaction would be. But once people saw the result, then everyone relaxed, the balloon sort of deflated: it was very interesting, the power of architecture itself to convince.”
